In January 2024, Nicolás Jimenez Neira, CEO of Kinesix VR, appeared on Entrepreneurial Universe, hosted by Iván Núñez, to talk about a groundbreaking technology transforming neurorehabilitation.
Kinesix VR is a system that uses virtual reality to help people regain mobility after accidents or illnesses that affect their movements. According to Nicolás, the brain can “relearn” how to move parts of the body thanks to neuroplasticity, which allows it to create new connections between neurons. This learning is innovatively stimulated through Kinesix VR technology.
“The most basic concept is that you can, for example, use the movement of a healthy arm to make the brain ‘imagine’ it’s also moving the affected arm. This tricks the brain, which starts to understand that it can move that area again,” Nicolás explained during the interview.
7 Modalities for Various Needs
Kinesix VR features seven modalities tailored to different therapies. More than 400 exercises based on everyday activities and games are offered, including a 360-degree virtual gym. This helps patients feel more engaged and connected to their therapy.
Additionally, the technology provides solutions for different rehabilitation profiles. For instance, it has been adapted for children treated by Teletón, integrating objects and games designed to be appealing and meaningful to them. It has also been customized for institutions like workers’ insurance companies (AChs and Mutual), ensuring better care for their patients’ specific needs.
Technology That Innovates and Scales
One key aspect Nicolás highlighted on Entrepreneurial Universe is the innovation behind Kinesix VR. Unlike other systems, it uses hand-tracking technology, eliminating the need for controllers. This demands physiological movements and enables finger motion tracking, allowing for more precise assessment of patient progress.
The software, developed by Chilean professionals, is protected under three international patents. These patents cover its 3D metrics, methodology, and advanced hand-tracking system. Furthermore, Kinesix VR operates in multiple countries, including Canada, Spain, and Chile, demonstrating its ability to scale globally.
“Everything we’ve designed aims to make therapists’ jobs easier while helping patients recover,” Nicolás mentioned. For example, exercises can be customized and performed at home, maintaining a constant connection with doctors or rehabilitation centers.
